My current obsession: character makeup that looks “drawn on” 🎨

Some days I want cute and clean. Other days I want full character energy—like I stepped out of a comic panel, a game cutscene, or a Halloween poster. Lately I’ve been mixing inspo from a few totally different vibes: the chaotic split-color energy of Harley Quinn, the soft-but-spooky doll look from Monster High (Draculaura forever), the bold glam drama of Jessica Rabbit, and that super specific painted-shadow style from Arcane.

So this post is my Arcane-inspired character makeup breakdown—done in a way that still feels wearable, but has that illustrated depth. If you’ve ever looked at Arcane-style makeup and thought “that’s cool but I could never,” this is for you. Beginner-friendly, step-by-step, and yes… it might look a little crazy halfway through. That’s part of it 😅

Before anything: the “art study” mindset (this changed everything)

The biggest difference between regular glam and Arcane-style character makeup is that Arcane looks like it was painted. The shadows are placed with intention, and the highlights pop because the skin finish stays mostly matte.

What helped me most was doing a tiny “art study” first: I look at a few reference images and ask myself:

Where are the highlights always showing up? (usually tops of cheekbones, bridge of nose, inner corners)

Where are the shadows always sitting? (around the eye socket, sides of nose, under cheekbone, jawline)

This sounds extra, but it saves time because you stop guessing and start mapping.

Skin prep + base: keep it matte so the highlights look intentional ✨

For Arcane-inspired makeup, I avoid a super dewy base. Dew can blur the “illustrated” effect. I go for a more natural-to-matte finish, then place highlight only where I want that sharp pop.

My base steps:

1) Even out the skin with a light-to-medium coverage base (whatever you’re comfortable with). The goal is a smooth canvas, not heavy cake.

2) Conceal strategically under eyes, around nose, and any redness. I keep the center of the face brighter because Arcane-style faces often have that dimensional, lit-from-within center.

3) Set the base with powder—especially under eyes and around the nose. This is where the shadows will sit, and you want them to blend cleanly.

Mapping the face: the Arcane contour “sketch” step 🖌️

This is the step that makes it look like character makeup instead of everyday contour.

Start with a light contour shade (think soft taupe or light brown). I literally “map the space” first, especially around the eyes and nose.

Here’s the exact order I follow:

1) Map a light shape around the eyes like you’re sketching an eye socket. Don’t worry if it looks dramatic—Arcane shadows are supposed to be visible.

2) Nose contour mapping: I place a light shadow along the sides of the bridge, then add a little shadow around the nostrils. Arcane noses often have shadow around the nostril area and a slightly stronger mid-bridge shadow.

3) Increase darkness gradually. This is key. If you jump straight into deep brown/black, it’s harder to control and easier to overdo. I build it in layers like a drawing.

4) Drag leftover pigment onto the cheek. This sounds weird but it’s so good: after I contour the eye area, I use whatever is left on the brush to softly pull that shadow outward toward the cheekbone. It creates that connected, painterly face structure.

Eyes: where Arcane meets Monster High drama 👁️

Arcane eyes are deep and smoky in a very specific way—more “shadow study” than glitter glam. But I also love adding a little Monster High energy (especially Draculaura inspo) because it gives that cute-spooky doll effect.

Step-by-step eye build:

1) Map the eye shape with a medium brown, focusing on the socket and outer corner. I keep the outer corner lifted for that animated look.

2) Deepen with dark brown right in the crease and outer V. I blend upward but keep the shape controlled—think “illustration shading,” not blown-out festival smoke.

3) Add a touch of black only to enhance depth. I tap it near the lash line and outer corner, then blend gently into the brown. This makes the eyes look more intense without turning into a full black eye.

4) Lower lash shadow: I connect the lower lash line shadow to the outer corner. This is where the Monster High vibe can sneak in—slightly exaggerated lower shadow makes the eyes look bigger and more doll-like.

5) Inner corner + lid highlight: instead of glitter, I use a lighter matte or satin shade. Arcane-style highlights look more like painted light than sparkle.

The nose + brow connection: tiny detail, huge character effect

This is one of those “why does it suddenly look like a character?” moments.

Arcane-style shading often places shadows:

• over the middle of the nose

• between the brows

• around the nostrils

I lightly shade between the brows and down the center bridge area (not highlight—shadow). Then I check if my brows need to come slightly inward to meet the contour lines. Not in a harsh way, just enough to make the face feel cohesive.

If you’ve ever done Harley Quinn-inspired makeup, you know how brows can change the whole personality of the look. Same here: brows are basically the “character setting.”

Cheeks + jaw: the “drawn cheekbone” technique

Regular contour is usually blended until it disappears. For Arcane character makeup, I blend—but I don’t erase it. I want the cheekbone to read on camera and in photos.

1) Cheek contour: I place it slightly higher than usual, then blend upward. This lifts the face and gives that animated structure.

2) Jaw + chin contour: I contour the jawline and add a little under the chin. It frames the face and helps the makeup look intentional from every angle.

3) Blush placement: I keep blush controlled and slightly cool-toned if I’m going full Arcane. If I want a Draculaura-inspired twist, I’ll place blush a bit higher and closer to the under-eye area for that doll flush.

Highlight: small, sharp, and placed like paint ✨

Because the base is mostly matte, highlight becomes the special effect.

I place highlight on:

• top of cheekbones

• tip of nose (tiny!)

• inner corner

• a touch on the brow bone

The trick is to keep it precise. Arcane lighting looks intentional, like a painter decided exactly where the light hits.

Lips: choose your character vibe (Harley vs Jessica vs Arcane)

This is where you can customize the whole look without changing the technique.

If I want Arcane-only: I go for a muted lip, slightly blurred edges, and a deeper tone in the center. It keeps the focus on the shading.

If I want a Jessica Rabbit moment: I go bold, crisp, and dramatic. A strong lip instantly turns the look into glam character makeup. The face shading still works—now it’s just “animated femme fatale.”

If I want Harley Quinn energy: I’ll do a playful lip color and keep the rest of the face a little messier/edgier. Harley is less “perfect painting” and more “chaotic icon,” so you can loosen the symmetry a bit.

Optional details that make it feel next-level (but still beginner-friendly)

1) Tiny shadow accents: add small, soft lines near the outer eye or under the cheekbone to mimic sketch marks. Keep it subtle—this can go from cool to messy fast.

2) Freckles or texture: a few light freckles can make the character feel more alive, especially if the rest is very matte and sculpted.

3) Lashes: you can go natural or dramatic. For a Monster High-inspired finish, I like a more lifted lash shape to exaggerate the eye.

Arcane-style character makeup has a phase where you look in the mirror and think: “I ruined it.” I promise, that’s normal 😭

What helps:

• Take it one step at a time. Mapping first, deepening second, refining last.

• Build darkness gradually. You can always add more shadow, but removing it can mess up the base.

• If something looks off, adjust the shape instead of scrubbing everything. Sometimes the fix is just lifting the outer corner or softening one edge.

• Photos matter. This style often looks even better on camera because the shading reads like artwork.

How I’d wear this (aka: Halloween, cosplay tests, or just because)

This is my go-to when I want a look that screams character makeup without needing a full costume. It works for Halloween makeup nights, cosplay makeup tests (like when you’re trying a character for the first time), or even just filming a transformation-style video.

And honestly… it’s also just fun. Like, sometimes I want to be a soft glam person, and sometimes I want to be a living concept sketch.
